Sultan of Johor visits RTS construction in Woodlands

SINGAPORE: The Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar today visited the site of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Woodlands North terminus to get a first-hand look at the progress of works on the much-anticipated new cross-border mode of transport.

Sultan Ibrahim was received by the republic’s Minister for Transport, S. Iswaran, and senior officials from SMRT Corporation Ltd, the project developer.

Accompanying him were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Johor State Secretary Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani.

The photos of his visit were shared on Sultan Ibrahim’s official Facebook page today.

The RTS Link is a 4km light rail transit shuttle service between the Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru and Woodlands North Station in Singapore.

The trains will have the capacity to move 10,000 passengers per hour per direction.

Passengers will enjoy a fast and seamless travelling experience with a train journey time of only about five minutes between the two stations.

Full Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) facilities of Singapore and Malaysia will be located at the Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar stations, which means that passengers only need to clear the immigration authorities once – at their point of departure.

When the RTS Link opens for service at the end of 2026, it will be a game changer that will significantly improve connectivity between Singapore and Johor Bahru and ease congestion along the Causeway.

Construction is proceeding at a good pace, with contractors on both sides confident the project will be completed on time.

The Malaysian portion of infrastructure works, including the train station, depot, and 2.7km of land and marine viaducts, are being handled by MRT Corp, a subsidiary of Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd.

Construction on the Singapore side began in March 2021.

The train station will be one of the biggest in the island state when completed and will provide a seamless travel link to the Thomson-East Coast Line and Woodlands North MRT station.

Rapid Transit System Operations Sdn Bhd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and SMRT Corporation Ltd, will be the operator of this new metro link.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Projek Transit Aliran Massa Sdn. Bhd. (MRT), Datuk Mohd.

– UTUSAN

MRT3’s construction cost to be around RM31b, and be operational by 2030, says MRT Corp

KUALA LUMPUR (March 15): The Mass Rapid Transit 3 (MRT3) Circle Line project, which is estimated to cost around RM31 billion, will be fully operational by 2030 after receiving the approval from the government. Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has also been appointed the project developer and asset owner.

Speaking at MRT Corp’s media briefing, its chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said the project’s construction cost is expected to be RM31 billion pending confirmation after the completion of the open tender exercise.

Zarif noted that the price tag of RM31 billion is similar with the MRT2 line that plies between Sungai Buloh and Putrajaya, which is scheduled to commence operation in the second quarter of 2022.

MRT3 Circle Line will have a circular alignment running along the perimeter of Kuala Lumpur City at about 51km in length, split between 40km of elevated tracks and 11km of underground tunnels, he added.

The current proposed alignment of MRT3 Circle Line will have 31 stations with 10 of them serving as interchange stations with the eight existing rail lines in the Klang Valley.

“The project was a result of various studies and engagements over the past year following the government’s approval for MRT Corp to carry out technical studies in April last year.

“Last year, we shared several insights on how MRT3 Circle Line would be designed. Our approach now is holistic and consistent with those design principles; alignment that delivers multiple benefits, long lasting residual value,” Zarif said.

Zarif stressed that the MRT3 Circle Line’s alignment not only includes connectivity to underserved areas of the city but also the establishment of a multi-model transit hub, development of local enterprises which are able to become regional champions to compete beyond Malaysia in providing maintenance, repair and operations services.

He added that MRT Corp will hold more briefings to share more details on the MRT3 Circle Line blueprint as the project progresses.
