Construction of MRT3 project to continue, says Wee

SUNGAI BULOH: The construction of the Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3) project, which was suspended by the previous government, will begin in the second half of this year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said as such, the ministry had given Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) three months to update the studies that have been conducted previously on the implementation of the project, to be presented to the cabinet.

"In the recent cabinet meeting, the government has agreed to go ahead with the MRT3 Circle Line and MRT Corp was given three months to update the studies which include the cost of this project," he told reporters here today. He said this after inspecting the operational availability of the first phase of the Putrajaya MRT line from Sri Damansara Sentral MRT Station to Kampung Batu MRT Station, Kuala Lumpur.

Also present were Deputy Finance Miniser I Datuk Abd Rahim Bakri and Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Isham Ishak.

Wee said the cost of the project would be decided based on the studies conducted by MRT Corp.

In 2018, the then Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the implementation of the MRT3 was put on hold to reduce the burden of government debt.

On the Putrajaya MRT line, Wee said the project reached 97 per cent in construction progress, and is expected to begin operations in August.

He said the remaining three per cent of the 17.5 km MRT line project would involve testing and commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems as well as trial operations.

Wee said the second phase of the project from Kampung Batu to Putrajaya, which has recorded an overall progress of 87 per cent, is scheduled to start operations in Jan 2023.

ECRL postponement: Govt suffers RM1.25 million in losses a day

ECRL postponement: Govt suffers RM1.25 million in losses a day

By Bernama - March 29, 2021 @ 9:24pm

PUTRAJAYA: The government incurs about RM1.25 million in losses a day following the Selangor state government's decision to postpone the realignment agreement of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

"Section A has been completed while Section B has been completed in terms of planning and arrangements to proceed with the project," he said.

The Selangor state government reportedly disagreed with the proposed realignment of the ECRL involving Section C even though MRL had provided solutions and mitigation involving environmental protection, minimising social impact and improving rail connectivity.

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said the Malaysia-China mega railway project has been delayed for about a year and might be delayed further if the Selangor state government remained adamant with its decision.

"I hope the Selangor state government will decide on which line it has decided on. For me, there is no reason for the Selangor state government to postpone its decision because we (MRL) have given all the explanations related to the project," he told reporters after launching his book entitled '365 Hari: Aspirasi dan Cabaran Mohd Zuki Ali', here today.

On the ECRL project, Mohd Zuki said it was divided into three sections namely Section A (Kota Bharu-Dungun), Section B (Dungun-Mentakab), and Section C (Mentakab-Port Klang) and was expected to fully complete in December 2026.

Zuki said the matter would be brought to the Cabinet by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong soon.

Meanwhile, Zuki, who is also Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) said the book revolved around the challenges he faced as the 15th KSN, starting with political unrest, followed by the Covid-19 pandemic that affected the country's economy, adding that the book was expected to be ready by the end of the year. --BERNAMA

ECRL alignment extended to 665km, says transport minister

ECRL picture - Astro Awani

PUTRAJAYA, March 9 — The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) has been further enhanced by extending the original alignment of 640 kilometres (km) to 665km as a more efficient rail alignment system.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said the additional alignment will encompass the original 30km which is 24km from Jalan Kastam (Port Klang) to West Port and 6km from Jalan Kastam to the North Port.

“This is the reason why we have to build a land bridge and optimise the usage of rail.

“The primary objective of constructing ECRL is as a cargo route which is 70 per cent cargo and 30 per cent for passenger. So we need to ensure there are returns,” he told an MOT Malaysia Prihatin Achievement interview recently.

An overall study was also carried out to improve ECRL logistic advantages especially involving issues of train congestion and safety currently faced by going through KL Sentral. At the same time, we are also offering better passenger service with connectivity to other public transport to Kuala Lumpur via Gombak Integrated Terminal.

Wee stressed that the success of ECRL is not only reverting to its original alignment but with improvement by passing through Serendah and linking Port Klang, with West and North Port.

“In terms of engineering cost, it only involved about RM50 billion compared to RM46.379 billion which did not include land acquisition which would take it to more than RM54 billion,” he said.

All technical problems faced by the mega project such as heritage sites, Orang Asli settlements and dams which have been amicably resolved.

The project which is expected to be ready in 2026, has reached 20.37 per cent completion in January 2021 compared to the original schedule of 19.39 per cent.

“The progress is due to Section B (Dungun-Mentakab) which was 9.47 per cent completed compared to 5.83 per cent as scheduled,” he said. — Bernama

New KLAV 27 trains better feature

PRASARANA Malaysia Bhd’s “Kuala Lumpur Additional Vehicle” (KLAV) programme, which saw the introduction of 27 new four-coach trains on the Kelana Jaya LRT route, will bring greater technology to the service.

Prasarana Group chairman Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said the KLAV 27 trains were equipped with a new system known as the Digital Route Map Display, which is integrated with a better door system.

“At the same time, the ‘Train Management System’ (TMS) is also improved, ” he said at a press conference during a visit to Hartasuma Sdn Bhd’s train building plant in Pulau Indah, Port Klang.

Two weeks ago, Prasarana announced that the 27 new four-coach Bombardier Innovia Metro 300 trains would be added in stages to the Kelana Jaya route until 2023.

“It will ensure train frequency is at an optimum level for the Kelana Jaya LRT route, in line with the mission of Prasarana Group to encourage people to use public transportation, especially services managed by us, ” said Tajuddin.

During his visit to the train plant, he viewed the final stages of the installation of two KLAV 27 trains, which are scheduled to be delivered to the Kelana Jaya LRT depot by the end of this year.

He added that to-date, 35 four-coach Bombardier 818 Series, 20 two-coach Bombardier 414 Series and 14 four-coach Bombardier Innovia Metro 300 train sets under the KLAV programme in 2017 as well as two coupling train sets were operating along the Kelana Jaya LRT route.

Tajuddin said 35% of the KLAV 27 project was developed by local companies as part of an effort to reduce dependency on foreign sources and outgoing cash flow.

“This includes installation of train interior, static train tests and local procurement such as floor systems, panels, lights and stanchions, ” he said.

He added this would help the growth of technology, industry and economy in Malaysia as well as boost the country’s competitiveness in the global market. — Bernama
