KL Sentral Major Facelift in The Cards; Wee

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is mulling a major upgrade on Stesen Sentral Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral), the first since it opened for operation in 2001, to cater the increasing number of commuters and traffic volume in the area.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the facelift was timely as the transportation hub has exceeded its 100,000 daily commuters capacity.

"KL Sentral receives an average of 200,000 commuters daily prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and currently it caters to about 70,000 commuters everyday.

"The upgrade plan needs to be drawn from a holistic view, not just in providing public transportation to the public, but to have a comfortable terminal.

"We will hold further discussions with the stakeholders on this," he told reporters after distributing Ramadan giveaways to KL Sentral users in conjunction with its 20th anniversary celebration today.

Earlier in a speech, Wee said KL Sentral has set a global benchmark for transit-oriented development as it has a reference for similar establishments in countries like Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Republic of Guinea and New Zealand.

"It is an honourable recognition for the country's transportation system development, in line in with our efforts to make Malaysia an exemplary developed nation.

"Malaysians, especially those in the Klang Valley continue to benefit from services at KL Sentral, which is a landmark in the capital city."

When talking about measures put in place amidst the pandemic, Wee assured commuters' safety was the highest priority because this was emphasised in all aspects of the terminal's operations.

He said Wee said KL Sentral would continue to be a vital transport hub with two upcoming mega rail projects.

"Upon completion of the East Coast Rail Link ( ECRL) project and south-bound Electric Train Services (ETS), we will further see an increase of daily commuters at KL Sentral.

"This place will be the biggest interchange point (in the country). We have to address the congestion issue in the area and conduct a traffic impact assessment."

When recalling the history of the KL Sentral Site, Wee said it was originally a marshalling yard owned by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) and used as a depot and warehouse to repair rail coaches.

"In 1997, MRCB's subsidiary Kuala Lumpur Sentral Sdn Bhd was given the mandate to develop a modern transportation hub through a concessionaire.

"At the time, the 29.13ha land was earmarked for a business hub, now known as KL Sentral CBD due to its strategic location and was expected to attract foreign investors in Malaysia."

Following this, plans to upgrade the public transportation in the city were put in motion, in tandem with infrastructure development, which saw the development of KL Sentral.

At the same event, MRCB Foundation contributed a total of RM100,000 to assist the B40 community including the visually-impaired individuals affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The beneficiaries were the Malaysian Foundation for the Blind, PPR Lembah Pantai, Lighthouse Children Welfare Home Association Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Baitul Hasan Kuala Lumpur.

This contribution will benefit about 500 people by providing food aid and sponsoring basic household items for the charity homes. NST.com.my

Construction of MRT3 project to continue, says Wee

SUNGAI BULOH: The construction of the Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3) project, which was suspended by the previous government, will begin in the second half of this year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said as such, the ministry had given Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) three months to update the studies that have been conducted previously on the implementation of the project, to be presented to the cabinet.

"In the recent cabinet meeting, the government has agreed to go ahead with the MRT3 Circle Line and MRT Corp was given three months to update the studies which include the cost of this project," he told reporters here today. He said this after inspecting the operational availability of the first phase of the Putrajaya MRT line from Sri Damansara Sentral MRT Station to Kampung Batu MRT Station, Kuala Lumpur.

Also present were Deputy Finance Miniser I Datuk Abd Rahim Bakri and Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Isham Ishak.

Wee said the cost of the project would be decided based on the studies conducted by MRT Corp.

In 2018, the then Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the implementation of the MRT3 was put on hold to reduce the burden of government debt.

On the Putrajaya MRT line, Wee said the project reached 97 per cent in construction progress, and is expected to begin operations in August.

He said the remaining three per cent of the 17.5 km MRT line project would involve testing and commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems as well as trial operations.

Wee said the second phase of the project from Kampung Batu to Putrajaya, which has recorded an overall progress of 87 per cent, is scheduled to start operations in Jan 2023.

The total construction cost of the Putrajaya line is RM30.53 billion. – BERNAMA

ECRL postponement: Govt suffers RM1.25 million in losses a day

ECRL postponement: Govt suffers RM1.25 million in losses a day

By Bernama - March 29, 2021 @ 9:24pm

PUTRAJAYA: The government incurs about RM1.25 million in losses a day following the Selangor state government's decision to postpone the realignment agreement of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

"Section A has been completed while Section B has been completed in terms of planning and arrangements to proceed with the project," he said.

The Selangor state government reportedly disagreed with the proposed realignment of the ECRL involving Section C even though MRL had provided solutions and mitigation involving environmental protection, minimising social impact and improving rail connectivity.

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said the Malaysia-China mega railway project has been delayed for about a year and might be delayed further if the Selangor state government remained adamant with its decision.

"I hope the Selangor state government will decide on which line it has decided on. For me, there is no reason for the Selangor state government to postpone its decision because we (MRL) have given all the explanations related to the project," he told reporters after launching his book entitled '365 Hari: Aspirasi dan Cabaran Mohd Zuki Ali', here today.

On the ECRL project, Mohd Zuki said it was divided into three sections namely Section A (Kota Bharu-Dungun), Section B (Dungun-Mentakab), and Section C (Mentakab-Port Klang) and was expected to fully complete in December 2026.

Zuki said the matter would be brought to the Cabinet by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong soon.

Meanwhile, Zuki, who is also Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) said the book revolved around the challenges he faced as the 15th KSN, starting with political unrest, followed by the Covid-19 pandemic that affected the country's economy, adding that the book was expected to be ready by the end of the year. --BERNAMA
